Residential Treatment Centers for Addiction and Mental Health

Residential Treatment Centers for Addiction and Mental Health

We are a blog dedicated to helping those suffering from addiction and mental health disorders. A big piece of that puzzle these days is residential treatment, sometimes called inpatient treatment. We thought we’d offer some information about the residential treatment model, how to find the right place, and some of our favorite places.

First, let us just say that we are not affiliated with any of the programs we mention and do not claim to be representing them in any way. We also were not paid or compensated in any fashion for including anyone (so please don’t email us asking to be added and offering to pay!). We have been around the treatment industry for years and just want to offer our thoughts on the issue. These are also not professional medical recommendations!

What is Inpatient Treatment?

So first, let’s discuss what exactly inpatient treatment is. You may hear the terms residential and inpatient used interchangeably. They mean the same thing. This treatment model is one in which the people live at the location where they are receiving treatment. There are many different types of treatment programs, and this is just one. The recovery process usually begins with detox, and inpatient treatment is the second step.

The benefit of residential treatment is that the individual seeking help can minimize distractions and temptations. By living in a safe environment, you can get the help you need and be surrounded by a supportive environment. Because a residential treatment center separates the individual a bit from everyday life, they can focus on their recovery without the temptation of friends, the chaos of work life, or worrying about things like food and shelter.

So, what is rehab like? It really depends on where you go as treatment centers differ greatly. However, you can expect to receive therapeutic care for your addiction and/or mental health disorder, have a full schedule with meals planned and periods of relaxation, and the opportunity to really dive into your experience and see what you can do to lead a life free from drugs and alcohol.

Residential Treatment Programs for Substance Abuse

There are a ton of different residential treatment centers across the United States. Some are quite luxurious and expensive, while others are free or covered by insurance. Here we have some of our favorite residential treatment centers. If you want to find something that is free, scroll down to our free treatment centers!

Addiction Treatment MalibuElevation Behavioral Health

Elevation Behavioral Health is a dual-diagnosis treatment facility in the hills of Malibu, California. They are certainly a luxury treatment center, with a beautiful home and beautiful views. Elevation is one of our favorite residential programs for several reasons. First, they’re licensed as a primary mental health facility. Unlike many other treatment centers that claim to treat co-occurring disorders, Elevation Behavioral Health truly has the staff and expertise to treat mental health disorders. Another reason we love them is that they also offer treatment modalities that aren’t strictly twelve-step based.

You can visit Elevation Behavioral Health at https://ElevationBehavioralHealth.com

Changing Tides Addiction TreatmentChanging Tides Addiction Treatment

Changing Tides Treatment is a treatment facility in Ventura, California. We love Changing Tides for many reasons. First, the owners of Changing Tides are involved intimately in the programming and operations. They care deeply about the work they do and are active with the community they’ve created. Changing Tides offers some holistic treatment options, including nutritional counseling, regular exercise, and meditation groups. They’re right on the beach in beautiful Ventura, so they take their clients out to the water and sand to enjoy some sunshine and nature.

Free Inpatient Treatment Centers

If you don’t have money and are uninsured, don’t give up! There are options out there for you. To start, you may try calling treatment centers and seeing if they have any scholarships available. There are also many free resources out there for you. Here are a few that we know of:

SAMHSA

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) maintains a list of behavioral health treatment resources at FindTreatment.SAMHHSA.gov that is extensive. You can filter by cost, insurance, services offered, and search radius. As a national directory, you’re sure to find a place in their directory that can help you recover!

Salvation Army

Salvation Army is a Christian organization offering treatment services across the country. You may have seen Santa outside your local grocery store collecting money, or may have donated old clothes to Salvation Army. You can visit them at www.SalvationArmyUSA.org and find a center near you.

Free Rehab Centers

www.FreeRehabCenters.org offers listings of free treatment centers across the country. We’ve looked through their listings and noticed quite a few of them are private treatment centers, so you may have to try a few before finding one that is actually free. Nonetheless, it’s a great resource for those who are serious about finding a treatment program!

Which Program is Right for Me?

Every treatment center is not created equal. There are some dangers in searching for treatment online that we covered in a previous post, and it’s a life-changing decision. It’s important to find a facility that meets YOUR needs specifically. If you’re suffering from a mental health disorder like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, find a place that truly specializes in mental health treatment. Here are a few questions and things we like to recommend people find out about the treatment center before admitting to treatment there:

  • What age ranges do they serve?
  • Do they work with your insurance?
  • Are there any additional costs?
  • What is the general length of stay?
  • Will you be staying in coed or gender-specific facilities?
  • Do they have a psychiatrist on staff?
  • Is there a family program?
  • What is their policy on electronics?
  • Do they have a visitor policy?
  • Are there any alumni that you can speak with to share their experience?
