Essential oils have many uses. I was quite skeptical myself before finding some oils that helped me relax, sleep, and take breaks. I also found some that gave me energy and helped me focus. There are a few oils that people use to help with addiction. Although this is by no means a complete list, here are a few essential oils for alcoholism that we love.
Bergamot is a type of orange used for many different things. It’s known to help control appetite and relieve tension. In addition, diffusing bergamot can help us break negative thinking cycles and uplift the mind. As such, it’s a useful oil in early recovery to help us let go of the “stinking thinking” we so often experience!
Lavender is perhaps one of the best known essential oils. There has been a substantial amount of research on lavender oil showing its usefulness with various experiences and difficulties. Lavender is soothing and can help us unwind at the end of a long day. It works well if you add just a few drops into a bath at the end of a day, apply it gently to the bottoms of the feet, or put some lavender in your clothes to help keep calm throughout the day.
Black pepper oil is an intense oil, so be careful with it! It’s one of the most commonly used oils in working with cravings. You can put a single drop under the tongue to help manage cravings for drugs or alcohol, and be ready for the intensity! You can also diffuse pepper oil to help give some energy in a focused, non-anxious way.
Clove is another essential oil that works well for alcoholism and addiction. Clove essential oil has strong cleansing properties, and is believed to help the liver detox. Much as pepper does, clove oil can help weaken cravings if taken orally. Again, be careful and only use one drop at a time as concentrated clove oil is a strong taste/smell!
Chamomile is another oil that is incredibly well-known. It’s a common ingredient in bedtime and stress-relief teas, and has a strong calming effect. It is a cleansing agent for the liver, can calm anxious feelings, and soothe irritability. It’s especially helpful at the end of a long day to soothe any frustrations, anger, or stress. Try diffusing some chamomile in the room, put a drop or two in hot water or tea, or use it topically by applying it directly to the wrists or neck. You can also put a drop of chamomile in your lotion!
You’re probably familiar with geranium, the common plant and flower. Geranium is one of my personal favorites. It is believed to open the heart and allow for a deeper connection with ourselves. Use some geranium in a diffuser or put some in your moisturizer to experience a softening with yourself. Geranium is a great oil to use with your meditation practice or inventory-taking during your days!
Grapefruit is a citrus and is more energizing than relaxing. It may help reduce cravings when used aromatically, can be used directly on the skin to relieve tension. As a more uplifting oil, grapefruit is great to use in the morning or during the day. By adding some to your lotion, you’ll be left with a scent that picks you up throughout your day.
